Recent NetGalley Reads

Wish You Were Here by Jodi Picoult

Wish You Were Here – Jodi Picoult

Expected Publication Date: November 30, 2021

Considering Jodi Picoult is one of my favorite authors, of course I have to kick off the list with her book, even though we still have a bit of a wait before this one is officially published!

Diana and Finn are supposed to travel to the Galápagos Islands together, but the coronavirus has other plans. Finn, a surgeon, can’t leave New York City in the midst of the pandemic, so Diana reluctantly goes on her own.

We all know since the world shut down in March, 2020, nothing has been the same, and people have made major life changes. What will happen with Finn and Diana?

Wow. I thought I knew the direction this story was heading, and I was blindsided about halfway through. This book is engaging, unputdownable, and something that will leave you thinking long after you turn the final page.

The Children’s Secret by Nina Monroe

Expected Publication Date: September 7, 2021

The Children’s Secret by Nina Monroe

Even though nothing ever happens in this sleepy town, when a child is shot, focus shifts.

At a child’s birthday party, one is shot, and the others are keeping quiet.

I can definitely tell the amount of time this author dedicated to constructing her characters, but there were so many to keep track of, it would get confusing.

The premise for this book hooked me, and it is definitely a hot topic right now. While it is somewhat of a mystery (Who shot Astrid?), I would probably not categorize this one as a thriller, as advertised.

AfterMath by Emily Barth Isler

Aftermath by Emily Barth Isler

Expected Publication Date: September 7, 2021

Twelve-year-old Lucy is the new girl in school, and after recently losing her brother to a congenital heart defect, she has a long road of healing ahead of her. The other students in school are no strangers to tragedy as they are all survivors of a recent school shooting.

Lucy copes by clinging to the subject of Math, considering everything with Math is certain in a very uncertain world. With time she is able to make friends, although initially struggling as an outsider among students with such a strong bond over a horrible incident.

It makes me so sad to even think of children who need to deal with similar situations in real life, but unfortunately this book is NEEDED. I hope this becomes a must-read for junior high students, and I would highly recommend it to families dealing with loss.

While fictional, I found the emotions and character development very realistic. Well written and moving.

The Perfect Father by Charlotte Duckworth

The Perfect Father by Charlotte Duckworth

Expected Publication Date: August 24, 2021

After suffering from a difficult pregnancy, Esther finally has a healthy and beautiful baby girl. While she returns to work, her husband, Robin, offers to stay home as the stay-at-home dad to take care of baby Riley.

But something is not so perfect about Robin. He has secrets, and Esther is forced to face her worst nightmare when she returns home from work one day and both Robin and Riley are missing.

The storyline hooked me, and even though I am typically not a fan of stories with unlikable characters this one drew me in from page one and I found myself staying up late to finish it.

I will say I find it much more a work of fiction and drama than a thriller (as it is classified). However as soon as I readjusted my expectations, I was left satisfied.

How To Kill Your Best Friend by Lexie Elliott

My final featured NetGalley read

Expected Publication Date: August 17, 2021

Lissa, Georgie and Bronwyn are close friends so when Lissa is presumed dead after a drowning accident, of course there are questions. How could such a strong swimmer drown? Where is the body? If it wasn’t an accident… are Georgie and Bronwyn even safe?

The friends, along with some other fellow swimmers, gather at a resort to honor Lissa’s death, and the author lets little secrets slowly drip onto the pages.

Not exactly a fast-paced thriller, but with a satisfying ending, I would recommend it to readers who don’t mind waiting for the second half to be heavily more entertaining than the first

  1. I haven’t heard of any of these but they look super interesting! The Perfect Father definitely seems like a book that I would love. I’ll have to check it out. 🙂
